Mount Pilatus & the World's Steepest Cogwheel

While travelling through Europe with Bryson and my family I booked us all a day trip through Lucerne and the Swiss mountains which consisted of a three part tour of Lucerne, Mt. Pilatus, and Lake Lucerne. The whole day was incredible - here are photos of part two!

After taking a gondola ride up the mountain, actually two of them, as we had to transfer to a larger gondola to reach the final peak we got to explore around Mt. Pilatus. The views are beyond impressive- Kriens and the lake to one side with large peaks and valleys dipping across one another with the Alps in the distance.

Oh, and incase you weren't impressed yet it needs to be mentioned that there is a hotel on top of the mountain so you can literally wake up to this view. Wake up to this while eating breakfast in bed no less. It is on the pricier side when factoring in transportation up the mountain, but hey, if you're gonna splurge, do it right.

There are various hiking trails around the mountain as well as a trail that allows you to hike up the mountain rather than taking the gondola up. I would have loved to do this but we were limited on time (it's about 3 hours one way) and Bryson actually broke his foot skateboarding 4 weeks before we left for Europe.

My favourite view of the day was of this chapel on Klimsenhorn. One of the images below helps to show how 'in the middle of nowhere' and isolated it appears from above on Mt. Pilatus.

Another way to get either up or down the mountain (aside from gondola or hiking) is by cogwheel train - the steepest one in the world with a maximum gradient of 48% in some areas. If ya don't know, that's pretty steep.

Mt. Pilatus far exceeded my expectations! Even my impossible to impress too cool to smile brother had a good time. If you happen to be lucky enough to live in the area or be travelling near Switzerland the areas natural beauty and landscape should not be passed up. Before even leaving the mountain all I could think about was when I'd be able to come back.
