We absolutely love fall here at Spruce & Gunn! The season doesn't really need an introduction or explanation- its crisp air and rich colour palette can hold its own. Sadly, here in Alberta fall doesn't last long. By the end of September most leaves have already changed colour and began to fall. If we're lucky snow will hold off until after Halloween but that's pretty rare, so we usually have to pack a whole season of autumn activities and cooking into 1-2 months. This year we're really excited to share a ton of seasonal posts on our blog to honour the upcoming seasons. First off, apple cider! Farmer's markets in September and early October are incredible! Filled with greens, squash, apples, and the end of summer harvest. Here's an amazing recipe to get you into the spirit of the season and make use of those crispy apples.
- 10 apples, quartered
- 1 orange, sliced
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 4 cloves
- 6 all spice berries or 1 tbsp all spice
- 1/4 maple syrup
- Place apples in large pot and cover with water so all apples are submerged and covered. Add in orange slices, syrup, and spices. Bring pot to a boil and boil uncovered for 1 hour. Reduce heat, cover pot, and simmer for about 2 hours.
- Let mixture cool and strain through a fine strainer. Strain again through cheesecloth if necessary to get rid of any left over pulp or apple bits.*
- Refrigerate and serve either hot or cold with a cinnamon stick and apple slice. Yum!
*alternatively, add all spices to a piece of cheesecloth and tie to make a spice bundle. Remove spice bundle and ladle out oranges and apples prior to serving.
